Times-Picayune Article About Hispanic Influx
The Times-Picayune recently ran an article highlighting the challenges that Hispanic immigrants face as they try to adjust to their new lives here in New Orleans. It is an interesting read that underscores the need for volunteers to help this new (and probably permanent) population to integrate into our community. Volver
On Sunday, 1/28/06, 7 members of TULASO ventured to Canal Place theater to see a showing of Volver. Volver, starring Penelope Cruz, is a fantastic film about the intimate connections between families of women, release from skeletons of the past, and returning to life as free and as love-filled as can be.. At least that was my interpretation. TULASO comped the tickets and pizza for those who attended, which should serve as a reminder to those who didn't come: come to our next event!
On thursday, TULASO is getting together at Vera Cruz at 7:30 PM. Come by and have some soda pop!

Another ESL Volunteering Opportunity

With the recent influx of Hispanics into OrleansParish following Hurricane Katrina, there is a great need for ESL programs in many of the public schools in our area. CACTUS is partnering up with Communities in Schools to try and put together one of these programs for Berhman Elementary Charter School on the West Bank. Since the program is brand new, it can go one of two ways: volunteers can help the Spanish speaking students to learn English, or the program can be geared to helping the English speaking students learn Spanish and a little about the culture of their new peers. In order for this project to really take off, we are also looking for a Project Coordinator. A Project Coordinator is someone who maintains the relationship with Communities In Schools, as well as the school, recruits volunteers and keeps everyone accountable. The PC is also asked to get van certified so that he or she will be able to transport volunteers to and from the school each week.If you are interested in volunteering or becoming the Project Coordinator for this project please email Emily at epetrino@gmail.com

Latin American Studies Symposium
Birmingham Southern College is holding its 15th annual Latin American Studies Symposium on March 30-31. If you're thinking about graduate school, this is an invaluable opportunity to practice presenting your work as well as to add another line to your resume.

Our first meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 24 from 8-9 pm in Room 209 of the new LBC (the old UC). It won't be long but there are a lot of important things to cover so we hope to see you there.

Student Activities Expo

Another student activities expo will be taking place on Friday, January 19th, from 3 PM-5 PM in the LBC (Lavin-Bernic Center for Campus Life, aka the new UC). If you'd like to stop in and hang out at the TULASO booth, please come by. Please tell other students and friends to come sign up if they are interested in Latin American Studies events!

Volunteer ESOL Teachers
A volunteer opportunity through the Hispanic Apostolate:
Volunteers are needed to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes to immigrants in the New Orleans area. Teaching English is a fun and interesting opportunity to get to know new members of our community, as well as help them adjust to their new surroundings.
Classes will begin on January 22 and continue until the beginning of May. Teachers are asked to commit to the full semester. Teaching schedules will require a commitment of two classes a week, for two hours each class. There are morning sessions from 9-11am and evening sessions from 6:30-8:30pm. Positions are available in New Orleans, Kenner, and possibly the Northshore.
There will be a mandatory training before classes begin. It is not required to speak any language other than English. If you are interested in teaching, please email us at volunteerHA@archdiocese-no.org or call us at (504) 722-5692.
